Behind the Brew: Rose Hips

Now that we are in the swing of spring, many flowers and herbs find their way into teas and tisanes. Rose Hips are a quite versatile flower used in many forms.

Rose Hips go by an array of names such as:

  • Rose des Apothicaires
  • Hop Fruit
  • Persian Rose
  • Phool Gulab
  • Pink Rose

The hips of the rose, as it were are the circular part of the rose under the petals, containing the seeds of the rose plant.  

 

The hips are picked in typically in the fall and fresh rose hips are used medicinally, due to their high Vitamin C content. They also contain lycopene, antioxidants, and Vitamins A and B. When the rose hips are dried and used in vitamins they tend to lose the high amount of vitamins.

 

 

Rose hips are used in all kinds of culinary adventures:

  • Drinks such as herbals teas; Rose Hips & Hibiscus are quite popular
  • Breads, cakes and pies
  • Soups and stews
  • Wine, mead, and beer
  • Jams, jellies and marmalade
  • Essential oils
