Rooibos Name Achieves Geographical Indicator Status

You’ve probably had rooibos and found it quite appealing. Its appeal is far reaching, so many companies want in. In on the use of the name, that is. However, in a recent agreement with the European Union, the South African rooibos manufacturers achieved geographical indicator status (which is a worldwide trade mark), preventing other countries from using the rooibos name on products grown outside the designated regions.

South Africa did have to compromise on feta cheese, though, but the overall agreement is definitely beneficial to both South African and Europe.
