In the sweltering heat of summer, hot tea is most likely the very last thing on your mind when trying to cool down. Research has shown, however, that receptors in your tongue feel the heat, then signal the brain to jump start the body’s cooling mechanisms. You start to sweat, which cools the body for longer periods of time than when drinking a cold beverage. If you live in a very humid climate, though, this might not work to your benefit. You may end up feeling stickier, not cooler, but it’s worth a try!
Why not put this idea to the test? Next time you’re hot and craving something cold, pour yourself a nice, hot cuppa…and see if you actually cool down!
